Jacob Hammon 1836-1864


Jacob Hammon was born on October 31, 1836, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his father, James, was 22 and his mother, Sarah, was 20.He had one brother William. In 1862 Jacob enlisted with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He fought through many battles through many states until April of 1864 when most of his regiment was captured or killed in an operation against Plymouth and New Berne North Carolina. He was taken prisoner and brought to the Camp Sumter military prison Andersonville, Georgia. He died on October 2, 1864, in the camp, at the age of 27 of scurvy.
